01

The Problem

The catalogue looks fine. The Merchant Centre dashboard disagrees.

Bad catalogue data doesn’t show on the shop front. It shows in disapproved Google Shopping feeds, unindexed product pages, cart drop-offs on missing weights, and the customer-support tickets that follow.

Feeds Disapproved

Google Shopping feed was disapproved because half the catalogue has no GTIN.

Duplicate and Missing SKU

Two products share the same SKU -fulfilment picks the wrong one on Monday morning.

Variations Misconfigured

A variation lost its parent in a tidy-up and now sits live with no add-to-cart.

Wrong Shipping Costs

Shipping calculator returns the wrong rate because thirty products have a weight of zero.

Incomplete Product Data

Product pages with no description rank for nothing and convert worse than they should.

No Clarity

No single screen tells you any of this – it surfaces a customer complaint at a time.

Catalog Audit finds every one of those in a single pass. Free to detect. Pro fixes them from the same screen.

02

What It Checks

Twelve checks that map to twelve places stores leak money.

Each check runs in the same scan. No setup, no rules to configure – the audit reads what WooCommerce already stores and flags what’s missing or wrong.

Missing SKU

Lists every published product and variation with an empty SKU field. Variable parents and grouped products are excluded — they don’t carry SKUs by design.

Spots products with no featured image set. Featured images appear in catalogue pages, cart line items, Shopping feeds, and most theme product cards.

Empty description

Lists products missing the long description. Search engines and AI shopping tools both prefer products with described features.

Zero price

Flags products priced at £0.00 / $0.00 that may be unintentional. The check distinguishes “deliberately free” from “the price field was never filled in” via the settings exclusion list.

Duplicate SKU

Catches two products sharing the same SKU value. Fulfilment, picking, and feed exports all assume SKUs are unique. The audit shows you which ones aren’t.

Missing product brand

Lists products with no product_brand term assigned. Runs only when WooCommerce Brands is enabled. Brand is a required field in most product feeds.

Empty short description

Lists products missing the short description. The short description sits above the add-to-cart button in most themes — its absence is a conversion drag.

Orphaned variations

Variation records whose parent product is missing. Invisible to customers, visible to the database — and a problem when reports start counting products.

Missing GTIN / UPC / EAN / ISBN

Finds products with no barcode identifier set. Google Shopping requires this for most product categories — missing GTINs are the most common feed rejection cause.

Missing price

Finds simple and external products with no regular price. WooCommerce won’t add them to the cart, and they’re invisible in feed exports.

Missing weight

Non-virtual products with no weight configured. The weight field drives shipping calculations and label printing. Empty weights silently break rate plugins.

Duplicate GTIN

Flags products sharing the same GTIN value. WooCommerce requires this identifier to be globally unique. The audit catches the duplicates before Merchant Centre does.

Plus an issue history, mark-as-resolved and ignore states, per-category counts, and a CSV export of any check result. The full audit runs on the free plugin – Pro adds the fix actions.

03

How It Works

Four steps from install to clean catalogue.

A first pass on a typical thousand-product store takes about a minute. Re-runs after a fix session take the same.

01 / Install the plugin
Install Ordlo Catalog Audit.

The audit menu lives under Ordlo → Catalog Audit. No setup wizard, no required configuration.

Ordlo Catalog Audit plugin dashboard displaying audit status, issue counts, and a prompt to run a full audit for WooCommerce product catalogs.
02 / Run the audit
Click Run Full Audit.

The plugin scans the catalogue in the background, paginated so it doesn’t time out on large stores. Results land in the Issues tab when the scan finishes.

03 / Browse the issues
Each check has its own tab

Missing SKU, Duplicate GTIN, Missing weight, and so on — with a count badge and a table of affected products. Click a row to open the WooCommerce editor. Mark an issue as Resolved or Ignore to keep the dashboard honest.

04 / Fix in bulk (Pro)
Fix in bulk (Pro)

With a Pro licence, every check gets one-click Fix and a Bulk Fix All action. Auto-generate SKUs, assign placeholder images, set a default weight, delete every orphaned variation in one go. Re-run the audit when you’re done.

Who It’s For

Three patterns we built around.

The catalogue-quality scenarios that shaped the checklist.

Sarah, craft supplies shop owner, using Ordlo WooCommerce Shipping Pro plugin for shipping rate management, visual builder for custom rules, and weight-based shipping tiers.

Sarah

Independent shop owner

400 products, mostly imported from a supplier CSV. Half had no SKU, a third had no weight, and Google Shopping had stopped approving the feed. Ran the audit, used the Pro fixes, fed the catalogue back into Merchant Centre on Friday.

The free version surfaces the work; Pro does it.

James, agency developer, representing Ordlo WooCommerce Shipping Pro plugin features for client store management and shipping rate customization.

James

Agency developer

Inherits client catalogues mid-life. Standard pre-handover checklist: one Catalog Audit pass, one fix session, one CSV exported as proof of state. The 5-site Pro tier covers his portfolio.

Pro version makes James efficient and saves on customer support tickets

Priya

Scaling merchant

8,000 SKUs across two warehouses. Catalogue grows weekly. Re-runs the audit at the end of every week as a hygiene routine.

Pro pays for itself in the time saved hunting for missing GTINs after an import.

05

Free Vs Pro

Free finds the issues. Pro fixes them.

The detection layer is the whole audit, free on WordPress.org. The fix layer is what Pro adds.

Questions

The bits people ask first.

If your question isn’t here, the Knowledge Base goes deeper. Or send a note.

What does the free version actually do?

The whole audit. All twelve checks, the issue tabs, the resolved/ignore workflow, CSV export, and the activity log. The only Pro-gated piece is the fix actions – the one-click and Bulk Fix All buttons, the SKU auto-generator, the orphan cleanup, and CSV import for offline batches. Detect free, fix in Pro.

Will any bulk action overwrite existing data?

No. Every Pro fix action shows a confirmation modal listing exactly what will change, and the activity log records every change after the fact. Existing prices, SKUs, or descriptions are never overwritten without you seeing the list first.

How does the SKU auto-generator work?

Pick a pattern in Settings — ID-based, slug-based, or sequential, with a prefix — and the plugin previews every SKU before applying. It also checks generated SKUs against existing values for collisions and excludes any that would clash.

Does it check variations as well as parent products?

Yes, where it makes sense. SKUs, GTINs, prices, and images are checked on variations. Variable parents and grouped products are excluded from SKU and GTIN checks because they don’t carry those identifiers by design.

Does it support WooCommerce HPOS?

Yes. Catalog Audit is HPOS-compatible from version 1.0.

Does it work with WooCommerce Brands?

Yes. The “Missing product brand” check runs only when the WooCommerce Brands plugin (or a compatible product_brand taxonomy) is active. If you don’t use Brands, turn the check off in the settings tab; the check stays dormant.

Does it work with Google Shopping / product feed plugins?

Catalog Audit doesn’t talk to Merchant Centre directly. It fixes the underlying WooCommerce data that feed plugins read from. Run the audit before your feed sync; let the feed plugin handle the upload.

Will my licence keep working when I deactivate the plugin?

Yes – your licence stays on your account. Reactivate, and the Pro features come back. Site count is concurrent active sites, not lifetime sites.

Can I exclude certain products from the audit?

Yes, click on the ignore button for that product, and it won’t ask again.

Can I get help configuring it?

Pro tiers get priority email support. The Knowledge Base has walkthroughs for each fix action and a section on what each check actually measures. Free tier uses the public WordPress.org forums.
