Customer groups are the foundation of Ordlo Wholesale. Almost every rule in the plugin — pricing, product visibility, shipping options, payment methods, minimum orders — can be set at the group level. Before you do anything else, it’s worth taking a few minutes to plan your group structure.
Creating a Group
- Go to Ordlo Wholesale → Groups → Add Group.
- Give the group a name that describes who belongs to it — for example “Trade”, “Distributor”, or “Staff”.
- Configure the group rules below.
- Save.
There is also a default wholesale group that acts as a fallback. Any customer who has the wholesale role but hasn’t been assigned to a named group will fall into this default group, so it’s worth setting a fallback discount there even if you plan to manage most customers in named groups.
Group Rules
Fallback Discount
This is a percentage discount applied to all products for members of this group, but only when no more specific wholesale price has been set for that product. It’s a useful safety net — for example, you might set a 20% fallback for your Trade group so that any product you haven’t priced manually still gets a discount automatically.
Tax Exemption
Tick this to remove tax from all purchases made by members of this group. This is useful for B2B customers who are registered for VAT and should be buying ex-VAT. You can also set tax exemption on individual customers via their customer record.
Payment Method Restrictions
Limit which payment methods members of this group can use at checkout. This is commonly used for trade accounts that should only pay by bank transfer (BACS) or invoice, rather than card.
Shipping Method Restrictions
Limit which shipping methods are available to this group. Useful if certain trade customers have an agreed carrier or should always collect rather than have things delivered.
Minimum Order Value
Set the minimum basket total a member of this group must reach before they can check out. This is useful for wholesale accounts where small orders aren’t economical.
Default Minimum Quantity
A minimum quantity that applies to every product for members of this group. You can override this per-product or per-customer where needed — see Pricing.
Category Rules
- Allowed categories — if set, members of this group can only buy products from the categories you specify. Everything else will be hidden from them.
- Excluded categories — block members of this group from buying products in specific categories, while still allowing everything else.
Assigning Customers to Groups
- When approving an application — during the application review process you choose which group to put the new customer in. See Registration & Applications.
- From the user’s WordPress profile — go to Users → All Users, open the customer’s profile, and set their Wholesale Group there.
Groups and Subaccounts
If a customer has subaccounts (staff members linked to their company account), those subaccounts automatically inherit the parent account’s group. You don’t need to assign subaccounts to groups separately. See Company Accounts & Subaccounts.
Targeting Groups with Other Plugins
If you use Ordlo Cart Rules or Ordlo Discount Rules, you can target rules specifically at a wholesale group — for example, giving your Distributor group an extra 5% off at the cart level, or blocking certain groups from checking out below a certain order value.
